Meet Heath's mate, the real gay cowboy
The struggles of the characters in Brokeback Mountain were familiar ground to cowboy Adam Sutton. Neil McMahon writes.
IT WAS the script that changed Heath Ledger's life - and when he read Brokeback Mountain he knew he had a friend reflected in its pages.
I've just read this script, Ledger later told his mate, Adam Sutton, and it sounds a lot like you. It was a film about a gay cowboy, and the actor was right; Sutton knew more than a bit about that.
That was New Year's Eve 2003 in Sydney, and Sutton was celebrating with Ledger, his then girlfriend Naomi Watts and their families. He had met them a year earlier while working as a wrangler on the set of Ned Kelly, and though they didn't know it then, the actors were seeing in a year which would transform them - Watts with an Oscar nomination, while Ledger took on a film many would have baulked at. His roll of the dice paid off; a Best Actor Oscar on Monday could confirm the wisdom of the gamble.
But there is more to Brokeback Mountain than Ledger's elevation. A simple love story at its core, it has also become a lightning rod and a landmark.

Teen Accused Of Threatening Mom Over 'Brokeback Mountain' DVD
18-Year-Old Says He Didn't Intend On Hurting Anyone
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- A Sheboygan teen has been charged with threatening his mother with a knife after she took away several movie DVDs.
Nicholas A. Post, 18, is charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct. The charge carries a maximum jail sentence of nine months because of a penalty enhancer of using a dangerous weapon.
Post's parents told investigators the mother took away "inappropriate videos" Thursday evening. A Sheboygan Press report said the movies included "Brokeback Mountain," a story of a relationship between two cowboys.
The criminal complaint said Post began screaming and trying to retrieve the DVDs. It said he hit his mother, then overturned a coffee table and grabbed a knife from the kitchen.
Post told police his parents' account was correct, and he didn't intend to hurt anyone with the knife. Quelle |

Der Inhalt ist nicht zum Lachen, aber die Kombination schon
Zitat: |
Rick Perry wore same jacket in anti-gay ad that Heath Ledger wore in Brokeback Mountain
He was only trying to make a folksy appeal to conservative Christians in Iowa.
And what he had to say was unlikely to cause much controversy with the evangelicals who dominate the Republican Party's caucuses there.
But when Presidential hopeful Rick Perry donned a brown jacket and spoke to the camera for his latest campaign ad he didn't expect to be so widely mocked.

Similar: Rick Perry's ad blitz in Iowa has caused mockery on the internet because of the jacket he wore

Familiar: Brokeback Mountain starred Heath Ledger, wearing the brown jacket on the left, and Jake Gyllenhaal whose characters fall in love while on a countryside trip
The Presidential hopeful's pitch features him taking his characteristic anti-gay stance - but wearing an almost identical outfit to Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain.
The iconic 2005 movie, directed by Ang Lee, is of course about a gay romance between Ledger as Ennis Del Mar and Jake Gyllenhaal's character Jack Twist.
Yet Mr Perry told the camera: 'You don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.'
It sparked widespread hilarity when it started airing on Tuesday.
In just two days more than 345,000 YouTube users gave the ad a thumbs-down and only 8,000 users said they liked it.
Chicago's legendary Second City comedy troupe even put up a parody complaining about wars and economic troubles that heterosexual, god-fearing politicians had gotten the country into.
Meanwhile, images such as the Teletubbies or flamboyant fitness instructor Richard Simmons digitally added to screen grabs from the ad have been posted on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.
Jim Henson, director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, said the response shows a growing generational divide in the political battle over gay rights.
He said: 'There's been a lot of movement in the last decade on gay rights, in which gay rights is increasingly being seen in the frame of civil rights and human rights, particularly (for) younger voters.'
Exit polls from 2008 showed California voters 29 and under overwhelmingly voted against the state's gay marriage ban.
National polling in 2010 showed that three-quarters of Americans supported ending of 'don't ask, don't tell,' the controversial policy that banned gay men and women from openly serving in the military.
Yesterday it was revealed Mr Perry 'respectfully declined' his invitation from Donald Trump to attend a debate that the real estate mogul was moderating in conjunction with Newsmax in Iowa on December 27.
Mr Perry joins a growing list of potential nominees, as Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Jon Huntsman have all announced that they will not be attending.
The only two that have accepted the invite are Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum while Michelle Bachmann has not made her intentions clear.

Ein Artikel aus dem Guardian von heute:
Zitat: |
The film that makes me cry: Brokeback Mountain
The story of two lovers forced to deny their true feelings – and selves – leaves me in tears every time
A tale of two men falling in love in 1960s Wyoming, Brokeback Mountain was never going to be your average screen romance; nor did director Ang Lee intend it to be.
Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, the 2006 film adaptation is not afraid to wear its heart on its bloodstained sleeve. Almost every scene packs some kind of emotional punch, largely thanks to the astonishingly raw performances from Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, who play, respectively, the lead roles of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist so memorably.
Spanning a 20-year period, the story pays careful attention to the trail of deceived wives, bewildered parents and confused kids the pair leave behind as their complex relationship intensifies.
On release, the film was praised for its intelligence and candour. Although it lost out to Crash for the best picture Oscar, it was recently revealed that many Academy members would now opt for Brokeback Mountain if they could change their vote, which speaks volumes about the film’s lasting impact.
Its most tear-jerking scenes occur on one of Ennis and Jack’s many trips back to Brokeback Mountain, where they first struck up a friendship while working as labourers. I’m sure I’m not alone in wincing as a visibly shaken Ennis recalls being forced by his father to view the mutilated body of a man killed in a suspected homophobic attack. The unbearable savagery of a person being ripped to pieces chills me to the bone.
A more subtle but no less painful moment occurs during a tense argument in which Jack, ever the idealist, reveals his dream to settle down with Ennis, buy some land together and live out the rest of their lives in a peaceful idyll. The depth of Ennis’s self-loathing is fully revealed when he flatly rejects the suggestion, leaving Jack crushed and defeated.
As the futility of the situation sinks in, they hold each other tenderly, desperately trying to fend off the infinite loneliness that awaits them back in the real world. The way Lee treats the stunning Wyoming landscape as a character in itself is most apparent here. The couple relive their first encounters freely and passionately, knowing that beyond the beautiful innocence of Brokeback Mountain lie the ugly judgments that will force them to live a lie.
The supporting characters endure more than their fair share of misery, too: Ennis’s wife, Alma (Michelle Williams), is simultaneously disgusted and devastated when she discovers her husband’s affair. And when Ennis is seduced by a sweet-natured waitress (Linda Cardellini) years later, the waitress is soon frustrated to tears by his cold treatment.
The single most heartbreaking scene for me, though, is when Ennis visits Jack’s childhood home after learning of his death. Inside Jack’s wardrobe he finds a pair of their old shirts, speckled with blood and mud, hanging neatly inside each other. No dialogue is necessary – the sight of a grieving, broken man yearning for his lost love is powerful enough.
Each time I see the film, despite knowing all too well how it ends, my tearful reaction is always the same. I know Jack and Ennis’s love is doomed from the start and that the happiness they seek will elude them, but I still root for them, regardless. Foolish as it may be, I just can’t face up to the reality of two lovers being forced to deny their true feelings and, indeed, their true selves, simply because society demands it of them. |
