When a bushy bearded Joaquin Phoenix announced he was quitting acting to become a rapper he was met with a puzzled response.
Despite Phoenix's repeated insistence that he was serious about his hip-hop career, many suspected it was an elaborate hoax for a documentary filmed by his brother-in-law Casey Affleck.
Now with the release of the trailer for I'm Still Here, fans can finally get an insight into what the Oscar-nominated actor has been up to.

Drama: The documentary, made by Casey Affleck brother of actor Ben, follows Phoenix during a tumultuous year in his life.
It is said to include scenes of outrageous debauchery, including full-frontal nudity, and drug use.
But none of this is included in the strangely solemn trailer.
Instead it begins with Phoenix being preached to by a guru-type, who dribbles drops of water on a table top.
As a montage of images of Joaquin living his Hollywood life play, the guru tells him: 'That's you, drops of water and you're on top of the mountain of success.
Mid-life crisis? Joaquin is followed as he bizarrely tries to pursue a career as a rapper
'And one day you start to sliding down the mountain and you go "Wait a minute, I’m a mountaintop waterdrop.
'"I don’t belong in this valley, this river, this low dark ocean with all these drops of water."'
While confusing, it does appear that Phoenix was not, as many thought, attempting a Sacha Baron Cohen-style mockumentary.
The Gladiator and Walk The Line star, 35, has since shaved off the unruly facial hair which characterises his look throughout the movie, but has continued to keep a low profile.
His last film was 2008's independent movie Two Lovers, co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, which the actor did limited promotion for.
After announcing his retirement from acting, Phoenix insisted he was serious about his musical career.
The trailer apparently sees Joaquin searching for a deeper meaning to his A-list life
He said: 'There's not a hoax. Might I be ridiculous? Might my career in music be laughable? Yeah, that's possible, but that's certainly not my intention.'
The film has been mired in controversy after director Affleck was accused of sexual harassment by two female workers.
Affleck is facing a $2.25 million lawsuit after cinematographer Magdalena Gorka says Affleck engaged in a pattern of harassing behaviour and refused to pay or credit her when the abuse forced her to leave the project.
The allegations mirror a separate lawsuit filed July 23 by Amanda White, a producer who says she left the movie after witnessing shocking behaviour and after refusing to sleep in a hotel room with Affleck.
Affleck has strenuously denied the allegations. But Gorka's lawyer said: 'In her 16 years of working in the entertainment industry she has never accused anyone of sexual harassment.
'Ms. Gorka knows there will be repercussions, and that she will be exposed to attacks mounted by Affleck's high-paid publicists and 'bulldog' attorneys. She ultimately decided that the truth needs to come out. We look forward to our day in court.'
I'm Still Here is released in the U.S. on September 9.

Joaquin Phoenix is the top choice to play the lover to Leonardo DiCaprio’s J. Edgar Hoover in the Clint Eastwood directed biopic, Hoover.
With a script by Milk’s screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, Hoover explores the relationship between Hoover and his reputed paramour and protégé, Clyde Tolson. None of the deals have yet to be finalized, according to New York Magazine.
Casey Affleck recently told Jay Leno that while people claimed to be worried about Joaquin during the filming of his documentary-esque film I’m Still Here, that was not the case. “While it was happening, people were happy just to mock him,” he said.
